FAQ

DO YOU REQUIRE A DEPOSIT?

Yes! My editing contracts stipulate a 50% deposit upfront with the other 50% due upon completion of the work.
I can accept payment via paypal, venmo, or personal check if I know you. If those options don't work for you, we can speak about other alternatives.

DO YOU OFFER EDITING SAMPLING?

I do for larger edits! It helps give me a good idea of the state of the manuscript, so I know what I'll be working with if hired, and lets the author get a feel for my editing style.

For developmental editing  and manuscript critique samples, clients should send their first three chapters. For line editing, I ask for a five-page excerpt from the middle of the piece.

Clients always get one hour of my time for free samples—how much of the excerpt I get through in that hour depends on the state of the project and may vary wildly.

WHAT FILE FORMAT SHOULD MY MANUSCRIPT BE SENT TO YOU IN? WHAT SOFTWARE DO YOU USE?

I prefer Microsoft Word files (.doc) so that both parties can make use of the Track Changes feature. (If clients don't have Word, however, LibreOffice Writer is a free alternative that is cross-compatible and functions almost identically! I'm even willing to use Google Docs in a real pinch, as it has an analogous feature to Track Changes, but it's clunkier and not as versatile.)

HOW DO YOU SET YOUR RATES?

I I consulted various industry standards as well as  other editors directly in order to find out their rates. I set my fees towards the lower end despite my experience level in order to keep them accessible to marginalized authors and authors looking to self-publish.  As the overall industry's prices shift, so will mine.

WHY DO YOU CHARGE BY THE WORD INSTEAD OF BY THE HOUR?

I prefer to charge by the word so authors can calculate  their cost from the start.

WHAT IS YOUR TURNAROUND TIME?

This depends on the project and the service, how many other clients I am working with at the same time, and must be determined on a case-by-case basis. My turnaround time for developmental edits on most novel-length manuscripts is about two-four weeks, for instance. I will be able to give you a TAT once you book my services, but definitely feel free to reach out and ask for an estimate if you'd like!
